Narrative:

Cruise en route to edwards via rosamond in contact with joshua approach for flight following. Joshua called traffic co-altitude at 7 O'clock, a KC10. They were at 9 O'clock nose-on, gear down in the palmdale landing pattern. I know I was at the palmdale pattern altitude, but hadn't really thought about it. Also thought that being in communication with joshua would make it ok to be closer to palmdale than 5 NM. Both I think serious mistakes. I didn't need to be at 4500 ft and could/should have voiced any concern about pmd's proximity to joshua. No evasive action was even close to necessary, but another 1-2 mi east and it could have been.
