Narrative:
Flight of 3 from kenosha wisconsin to yip. 2 cessna 152's and a piper aztec. In calm air at 105 KTS I experienced uncontrolled rolls of left and right 45 degrees. One of the cessna 152's and the aztec were side-by-side. I was behind both several hundred yards. After discussing the incident with the other pilots, it appears that I strayed into the wake of the aztec, which was flying quite slow to keep pace with the cessna 152's. In calm air, the unexpected rolls were very disconcerting, as it happened 3 times in a 5 min interval. I had concerns about mechanical problems since neither the other cessna 152 or aztec reported any problems. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: the reporter said he has been flying about 5 years to accumulate his 400 hours. He is currently working to add an instrument rating to his private license. His flight instructor was in the piper aztec. The reporter, the instructor and another cessna 152 pilot had pre-briefed for this formation flight of 3 aircraft. He was amazed at how much turbulence even the cessna 152 generated and left in its path.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CESSNA 150 PLT RPTR ENCOUNTERS TURB FOLLOWING PIPER AZTEC.
Narrative: FLT OF 3 FROM KENOSHA WISCONSIN TO YIP. 2 CESSNA 152'S AND A PIPER AZTEC. IN CALM AIR AT 105 KTS I EXPERIENCED UNCTLED ROLLS OF L AND R 45 DEGS. ONE OF THE CESSNA 152'S AND THE AZTEC WERE SIDE-BY-SIDE. I WAS BEHIND BOTH SEVERAL HUNDRED YARDS. AFTER DISCUSSING THE INCIDENT WITH THE OTHER PLTS, IT APPEARS THAT I STRAYED INTO THE WAKE OF THE AZTEC, WHICH WAS FLYING QUITE SLOW TO KEEP PACE WITH THE CESSNA 152'S. IN CALM AIR, THE UNEXPECTED ROLLS WERE VERY DISCONCERTING, AS IT HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN A 5 MIN INTERVAL. I HAD CONCERNS ABOUT MECHANICAL PROBS SINCE NEITHER THE OTHER CESSNA 152 OR AZTEC RPTED ANY PROBS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH REPORTER REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: THE RPTR SAID HE HAS BEEN FLYING ABOUT 5 YEARS TO ACCUMULATE HIS 400 HRS. HE IS CURRENTLY WORKING TO ADD AN INST RATING TO HIS PVT LICENSE. HIS FLT INSTRUCTOR WAS IN THE PIPER AZTEC. THE RPTR, THE INSTRUCTOR AND ANOTHER CESSNA 152 PLT HAD PRE-BRIEFED FOR THIS FORMATION FLT OF 3 ACFT. HE WAS AMAZED AT HOW MUCH TURB EVEN THE CESSNA 152 GENERATED AND LEFT IN ITS PATH.
