Narrative:

First officer flying, we were given STAR restr of 10000 ft and 250 KTS at walet. Advised first officer to allow for tailwind to make crossing. He assured me he had. Nearing fix he was fast and captain asked again if he was going to be able to slow ok. Said he could. Crossed fix at 10 mi but 290 KTS. Controller asked speed and captain advised 290 KTS and slowing. No further comment. Company stresses fuel savings to an excess and many pilots are cutting crossing altitudes too close.
