Narrative:

Cleared out of 22000 ft to 17000 ft. Selected 17000 ft on altitude selector and pressed altitude select on autoplt and made required callout. Before reaching 17000 ft, ATC cleared us to cross flm at 11000 ft. I selected 11000 ft in altitude selector, then pressed altitude select by force of habit, thereby turning off altitude capture mode of autoplt. I didn't make required callout at this time, at 17000 ft I increased rate of descent to cross flm at 11000 ft and made a mental note of 1000 ft to go but neglected to make the required callout. The first officer didn't catch either missed callouts or descent through selected altitude. At 10400 ft I noticed the error and notified ATC immediately. Supplemental information from acn 306609: it goes to prove standard callouts when used, decrease the chances of this type of situation from occurring.

Title: ALTDEV ALT OVERSHOT IN DSCNT.

Narrative: CLRED OUT OF 22000 FT TO 17000 FT. SELECTED 17000 FT ON ALT SELECTOR AND PRESSED ALT SELECT ON AUTOPLT AND MADE REQUIRED CALLOUT. BEFORE REACHING 17000 FT, ATC CLRED US TO CROSS FLM AT 11000 FT. I SELECTED 11000 FT IN ALT SELECTOR, THEN PRESSED ALT SELECT BY FORCE OF HABIT, THEREBY TURNING OFF ALT CAPTURE MODE OF AUTOPLT. I DIDN'T MAKE REQUIRED CALLOUT AT THIS TIME, AT 17000 FT I INCREASED RATE OF DSCNT TO CROSS FLM AT 11000 FT AND MADE A MENTAL NOTE OF 1000 FT TO GO BUT NEGLECTED TO MAKE THE REQUIRED CALLOUT. THE FO DIDN'T CATCH EITHER MISSED CALLOUTS OR DSCNT THROUGH SELECTED ALT. AT 10400 FT I NOTICED THE ERROR AND NOTIFIED ATC IMMEDIATELY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 306609: IT GOES TO PROVE STANDARD CALLOUTS WHEN USED, DECREASE THE CHANCES OF THIS TYPE OF SIT FROM OCCURRING.
