Narrative:
Air carrier X cleared into position after an airbus started his takeoff roll. I hit the stop watch and watched the airbus on TCASII with the first officer. At 1 min and 3 mi, we were given an immediate takeoff instruction then the tower continued to transmit to another aircraft. We called to say we could not comply with so close conditions and was told we should have informed the tower before taking the runway. When we took off, the tower guy, not to let a dead dog die, told us we had 10 mi separation, thanks to us.
