Narrative:
After departure from redding on runway 12 continued direct rbl at 3500 ft. Performing normal climb to cruise transition duties, cowl flaps, leaning, checking LORAN etc, looked up after a brief moment to see a twin engine air carrier aircraft filling up the right half of my windscreen. Proceeded to take immediate evasive action, a sharp left turn and dive. Heard the air carrier pilot communication with rdd tower who knew enough to identify me. Up until my evasive action, they appeared not to be aware I was there. This was confirmed in subsequent discussions. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter has talked to the metroliner captain since the near midair collision and they both have a clrer understanding of how the near midair collision occurred. The beech bonanza 35 pilot was intercepting his planned course at 3500 ft and the metroliner crew was intercepting the localizer in a slight descent through the same altitude. Both the pilot and the flight crew were engaged in cockpit duties and did not see the other aircraft until very late in their approach toward each other. Later the reporter discovered that, in addition to this event, his aircraft sales representative had not changed the aircraft registration, as promised, when he sold him the plane. That has now been corrected.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC BETWEEN A DEPARTING PVT ACFT AND AN ARRIVING ACR ACFT.
Narrative: AFTER DEP FROM REDDING ON RWY 12 CONTINUED DIRECT RBL AT 3500 FT. PERFORMING NORMAL CLB TO CRUISE TRANSITION DUTIES, COWL FLAPS, LEANING, CHKING LORAN ETC, LOOKED UP AFTER A BRIEF MOMENT TO SEE A TWIN ENG ACR ACFT FILLING UP THE R HALF OF MY WINDSCREEN. PROCEEDED TO TAKE IMMEDIATE EVASIVE ACTION, A SHARP L TURN AND DIVE. HEARD THE ACR PLT COM WITH RDD TWR WHO KNEW ENOUGH TO IDENT ME. UP UNTIL MY EVASIVE ACTION, THEY APPEARED NOT TO BE AWARE I WAS THERE. THIS WAS CONFIRMED IN SUBSEQUENT DISCUSSIONS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH REPORTER REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR HAS TALKED TO THE METROLINER CAPT SINCE THE NMAC AND THEY BOTH HAVE A CLRER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THE NMAC OCCURRED. THE BEECH BONANZA 35 PLT WAS INTERCEPTING HIS PLANNED COURSE AT 3500 FT AND THE METROLINER CREW WAS INTERCEPTING THE LOC IN A SLIGHT DSCNT THROUGH THE SAME ALT. BOTH THE PLT AND THE FLC WERE ENGAGED IN COCKPIT DUTIES AND DID NOT SEE THE OTHER ACFT UNTIL VERY LATE IN THEIR APCH TOWARD EACH OTHER. LATER THE RPTR DISCOVERED THAT, IN ADDITION TO THIS EVENT, HIS ACFT SALES REPRESENTATIVE HAD NOT CHANGED THE ACFT REGISTRATION, AS PROMISED, WHEN HE SOLD HIM THE PLANE. THAT HAS NOW BEEN CORRECTED.
