Narrative:

While acting as first officer and PF on an unscheduled far 135 passenger flight, we were flying at 6000 ft MSL near cmk VOR en route to teb from fok, when we were issued traffic at our 2:30 O'clock and 2 mi at 6300 ft. I spotted the traffic approximately 15 seconds after ATC called it, and it was on approximately 30 degrees converging course and much less than a mi. I immediately entered a 30 degree left descending turn and ATC was informed of the altitude deviation. VFR/IFR traffic mix is a big problem in and around and under the ny class B. We were on an IFR flight plan, and due to our altitude, at 250 KIAS. The other traffic, cheyenne III, was probably at a very compatible airspeed. As statistics show, this is where most mid-air/near midairs occur (converging). In my opinion, the 3 most hazardous places I have encountered while flying IFR, with regard to VFR traffic are in and around and under the lax class B, the ny class B, and the stl class B.
