Narrative:
Between air and vhp, requested deviation about a mi right of crs for WX. Center approved request. No limitations to deviation or other TA's were offered by center. Since we were not told to deviation no more than 1 mi, we understood our deviation request of about a mi to be non-specific and steered right of the buildup, a turn of about 30 degrees. We were in the process of turning back to vhp (about 270 degrees) when controller directed us to turn to 010 degrees. We observed TCASII traffic about 5 mi off our left, but received no TA or RA. Clrer communication on both the part of ourselves and center would have avoided this incident.
