Narrative:
I was beginning a cross country flight from casper, wy, to sioux city, ia, in an unfamiliar airplane using an unfamiliar NAVAID (GPS). As I was attempting to fly the aircraft and work the GPS equipment, I became unaware of my actual exact position on the sectional chart. As soon as I thought that I may have accidentally entered the R-7001A&B restr airspace at approximately 15 mi northwest of guernsey, wy (7y6), I immediately turned to a heading that I thought would allow me to exit the airspace as soon as possible. I realize that not only did I err in entering or possibly entering the restr airspace but I also made an error in misjudging my ability to fly the unfamiliar airplane and attempt to navigation it using unfamiliar equipment. Quite possibly a preflight that included a familiarization portion focused on the NAVAID would have prevented this possible inadvertent restr airspace entry violation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: POSSIBLE ENTRY INTO RESTR AIRSPACE.
Narrative: I WAS BEGINNING A XCOUNTRY FLT FROM CASPER, WY, TO SIOUX CITY, IA, IN AN UNFAMILIAR AIRPLANE USING AN UNFAMILIAR NAVAID (GPS). AS I WAS ATTEMPTING TO FLY THE ACFT AND WORK THE GPS EQUIP, I BECAME UNAWARE OF MY ACTUAL EXACT POS ON THE SECTIONAL CHART. AS SOON AS I THOUGHT THAT I MAY HAVE ACCIDENTALLY ENTERED THE R-7001A&B RESTR AIRSPACE AT APPROX 15 MI NW OF GUERNSEY, WY (7Y6), I IMMEDIATELY TURNED TO A HDG THAT I THOUGHT WOULD ALLOW ME TO EXIT THE AIRSPACE ASAP. I REALIZE THAT NOT ONLY DID I ERR IN ENTERING OR POSSIBLY ENTERING THE RESTR AIRSPACE BUT I ALSO MADE AN ERROR IN MISJUDGING MY ABILITY TO FLY THE UNFAMILIAR AIRPLANE AND ATTEMPT TO NAV IT USING UNFAMILIAR EQUIP. QUITE POSSIBLY A PREFLT THAT INCLUDED A FAMILIARIZATION PORTION FOCUSED ON THE NAVAID WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS POSSIBLE INADVERTENT RESTR AIRSPACE ENTRY VIOLATION.
