Narrative:
Severe thunderstorms in area. Approach changed runway and approach 3 times. Last we heard we were cleared runway 18R ILS then saw another air carrier aircraft ahead. Asked controller. He said turn to 090 degrees intercept runway 18 ILS localizer. Apparently we were cleared through runway 18R localizer to intercept runway 18L localizer and approach. The problem was both controllers had a tremendous amount of traffic and all became confused because thunderstorm had come over field. There was way too much radio congestion and changes in short order that caused this incident. Both pilots and controller were heads up to avoid a conflict.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: APCH CTLR FLC MISCOM RWY ASSIGNMENT.
Narrative: SEVERE TSTMS IN AREA. APCH CHANGED RWY AND APCH 3 TIMES. LAST WE HEARD WE WERE CLRED RWY 18R ILS THEN SAW ANOTHER ACR ACFT AHEAD. ASKED CTLR. HE SAID TURN TO 090 DEGS INTERCEPT RWY 18 ILS LOC. APPARENTLY WE WERE CLRED THROUGH RWY 18R LOC TO INTERCEPT RWY 18L LOC AND APCH. THE PROB WAS BOTH CTLRS HAD A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF TFC AND ALL BECAME CONFUSED BECAUSE TSTM HAD COME OVER FIELD. THERE WAS WAY TOO MUCH RADIO CONGESTION AND CHANGES IN SHORT ORDER THAT CAUSED THIS INCIDENT. BOTH PLTS AND CTLR WERE HEADS UP TO AVOID A CONFLICT.
