Narrative:
Airline flight from phl-mia at approximately XA00 on ZJX, south of wilmington, we were given 15 degree right turn for traffic. After a couple of mins, we were given direct to hobee intersection. Hobee was selected on the omega but the copilot (flying) failed to engage the autoplt to the omega. This was not noticed until ATC asked us to verify our clearance. We stated we were cleared direct to hobee. ATC stated our present course would take us west of hobee. We immediately recognized our mistake and corrected the situation. ATC then cleared us direct to heatt intersection. Remainder of flight continued normally. Situation occurred because crew did not xchk omega and autoplt engaged. All crewmembers should have crosschecked that omega was in fact engaged to autoplt, and aircraft was going to hobee intersection. Crew needs to pay more attention to make sure ATC clrncs are in fact complied with! Supplemental information from acn 312380: I was looking at high altitude map while copilot programmed omega for hobee. I assumed he coupled the omega to the autoplt. I should have monitored the actions of the copilot when he was making a routing change to the omega.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC MEMBER PROGRAMMED OMEGA FOR NEW CLRNC, BUT FAILED TO COUPLE TO THE AUTOPLT. ARTCC RADAR CTLR INTERVENED WHEN ACFT STRAYED FROM EXPECTED TRACK.
Narrative: AIRLINE FLT FROM PHL-MIA AT APPROX XA00 ON ZJX, S OF WILMINGTON, WE WERE GIVEN 15 DEG R TURN FOR TFC. AFTER A COUPLE OF MINS, WE WERE GIVEN DIRECT TO HOBEE INTXN. HOBEE WAS SELECTED ON THE OMEGA BUT THE COPLT (FLYING) FAILED TO ENGAGE THE AUTOPLT TO THE OMEGA. THIS WAS NOT NOTICED UNTIL ATC ASKED US TO VERIFY OUR CLRNC. WE STATED WE WERE CLRED DIRECT TO HOBEE. ATC STATED OUR PRESENT COURSE WOULD TAKE US W OF HOBEE. WE IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZED OUR MISTAKE AND CORRECTED THE SIT. ATC THEN CLRED US DIRECT TO HEATT INTXN. REMAINDER OF FLT CONTINUED NORMALLY. SIT OCCURRED BECAUSE CREW DID NOT XCHK OMEGA AND AUTOPLT ENGAGED. ALL CREWMEMBERS SHOULD HAVE XCHKED THAT OMEGA WAS IN FACT ENGAGED TO AUTOPLT, AND ACFT WAS GOING TO HOBEE INTXN. CREW NEEDS TO PAY MORE ATTN TO MAKE SURE ATC CLRNCS ARE IN FACT COMPLIED WITH! SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 312380: I WAS LOOKING AT HIGH ALT MAP WHILE COPLT PROGRAMMED OMEGA FOR HOBEE. I ASSUMED HE COUPLED THE OMEGA TO THE AUTOPLT. I SHOULD HAVE MONITORED THE ACTIONS OF THE COPLT WHEN HE WAS MAKING A ROUTING CHANGE TO THE OMEGA.
