Narrative:

Departed mdw on mdw 4 departure, assigned heading 220 degrees at 3000 ft by tower with thunderstorms approaching. Departure control was contacted while we were at 220 degree heading at 3000 ft. Advised ATC of necessary heading changes required to avoid thunderstorms. A heading of 180 degrees was assigned and a climb to 6000 ft. Advised ATC we could only hold 180 degree heading for 8 NM. Then requested a 140 degree heading to avoid thunderstorms on 2 occasions without response from ATC, then proceeded to turn to avoid thunderstorms. Upon clearing thunderstorms we flew 180 degree heading assigned by ATC. Clear of WX and at that time ATC advised us to contact ord TRACON when able.
