Narrative:
Departed mdw on mdw 4 departure, assigned heading 220 degrees at 3000 ft by tower with thunderstorms approaching. Departure control was contacted while we were at 220 degree heading at 3000 ft. Advised ATC of necessary heading changes required to avoid thunderstorms. A heading of 180 degrees was assigned and a climb to 6000 ft. Advised ATC we could only hold 180 degree heading for 8 NM. Then requested a 140 degree heading to avoid thunderstorms on 2 occasions without response from ATC, then proceeded to turn to avoid thunderstorms. Upon clearing thunderstorms we flew 180 degree heading assigned by ATC. Clear of WX and at that time ATC advised us to contact ord TRACON when able.

Title: NON ADHERENCE TO ATC CLRNC INSTRUCTION DURING A HDG TRACK DEV IN PROX OF TSTM ACTIVITY.
Narrative: DEPARTED MDW ON MDW 4 DEP, ASSIGNED HDG 220 DEGS AT 3000 FT BY TWR WITH TSTMS APCHING. DEP CTL WAS CONTACTED WHILE WE WERE AT 220 DEG HDG AT 3000 FT. ADVISED ATC OF NECESSARY HDG CHANGES REQUIRED TO AVOID TSTMS. A HDG OF 180 DEGS WAS ASSIGNED AND A CLB TO 6000 FT. ADVISED ATC WE COULD ONLY HOLD 180 DEG HDG FOR 8 NM. THEN REQUESTED A 140 DEG HDG TO AVOID TSTMS ON 2 OCCASIONS WITHOUT RESPONSE FROM ATC, THEN PROCEEDED TO TURN TO AVOID TSTMS. UPON CLRING TSTMS WE FLEW 180 DEG HDG ASSIGNED BY ATC. CLR OF WX AND AT THAT TIME ATC ADVISED US TO CONTACT ORD TRACON WHEN ABLE.
