Narrative:

Was instructed to descend to and maintain 9000'. Had been previously cleared to deviate as needed around buildups and thunderstorms. Did not descend right away. Next call from controller, several mins later, was to verify our altitude. We responded, 'out of 11000 for 9000.' I was talking with the first officer about the WX and the aircraft and I missed the descent instructions, although the first officer had the new altitude displayed in our altitude selector.
