Narrative:

We were cleared to climb to an altitude of 10000 ft. The co-captain responded 'cleared to 17000 ft' and set 17000 ft in altitude preselect. The controller did not respond that our altitude limit was 10000 ft. At 10000 ft our TCASII gave us a traffic alert at which time the co-captain asked the controller what altitude we had been cleared to. He responded 10000 ft. We stopped our climb at 10400 ft. The controller stated his altitude readout showed us above 10000 ft. We responded we were now level at 10000 ft approximately 30 seconds after he notified us of our altitude excursion.
