Narrative:

Contacted tower advising ready to depart on active runway 32. There was a great deal of static noise over the radio and no response. I repeated until I received a reply on about the third attempt. I made mention of their poor reception. Was given clearance to takeoff and made what I heard them say as a right turn. Again radio noise may have made the communication unclr. I departed and turned right. After doing so they advised that they had wanted me to turn left. They told me to proceed and contact departure frequency. Contacted departure. They reiterated that tower wanted me to turn left not right. I again explained what I had heard and not heard due to radio noise. I also mentioned that I had difficulty in raising them as well. An apology was made for the confusion. By 5 mi out, noise on these frequencys had disappeared. Normal flight resumed to grand rapids and on. Strive to make sure that both parties hear and understand radio xmissions. If an aircraft is proceeding on the wrong course, he should be advised so corrections can be made, not after 5 mi has progressed.
