Narrative:

We were climbing to 9000 ft after departing runway 24L at lax, first officer flying. Had been assigned heading 320 degrees on climb out to intercept gorham departure. As first officer was near leveloff, we were assigned heading 360 degrees. At leveloff (hand flown) we got TCASII warning of 'traffic, traffic.' aircraft landing lights were out the first officer window. First officer rolled out of right turn into left turn. After a few seconds first officer reported his 'capture' on the radial had disappeared. He turned back to 360 degree heading as socal gave us further turn and asked if we had navigation problem. First officer turned to new heading at maximum bank angle. We report to socal that we had a TCASII warning and had seen an aircraft. Socal said no aircraft were near us at that time. Continued on out the departure radial with no further problems.
