Narrative:
We were on a VFR flight plan from nxx to nel. The WX was VFR with patchy ground fog. We reported to lakehurst tower 15 mi to the northwest. We were requested to report again entering the class D airspace. Due to the thickening ground fog, we were busy looking for the runway and neglected to report entering class D. We did report 1 1/2 mi final, and received an unintelligible reply. I did call again on short final, requesting verification that we were cleared to land. We didn't receive that verification before landing. After landing, we were informed that we had landed without clearance. All hindsight being 20/20, we should have gone around and re- entered the pattern until our clearance was straightened out. Another consideration is that we were both so busy looking for the runway that nobody was taking care of the other business. Another consideration is that all the hourly sequences were reporting clear and 7 mi, so we weren't up to speed when unforecast WX appeared.

Title: FLC OF AN ATX SMT LANDED WITHOUT LNDG CLRNC.
Narrative: WE WERE ON A VFR FLT PLAN FROM NXX TO NEL. THE WX WAS VFR WITH PATCHY GND FOG. WE RPTED TO LAKEHURST TWR 15 MI TO THE NW. WE WERE REQUESTED TO RPT AGAIN ENTERING THE CLASS D AIRSPACE. DUE TO THE THICKENING GND FOG, WE WERE BUSY LOOKING FOR THE RWY AND NEGLECTED TO RPT ENTERING CLASS D. WE DID RPT 1 1/2 MI FINAL, AND RECEIVED AN UNINTELLIGIBLE REPLY. I DID CALL AGAIN ON SHORT FINAL, REQUESTING VERIFICATION THAT WE WERE CLRED TO LAND. WE DIDN'T RECEIVE THAT VERIFICATION BEFORE LNDG. AFTER LNDG, WE WERE INFORMED THAT WE HAD LANDED WITHOUT CLRNC. ALL HINDSIGHT BEING 20/20, WE SHOULD HAVE GONE AROUND AND RE- ENTERED THE PATTERN UNTIL OUR CLRNC WAS STRAIGHTENED OUT. ANOTHER CONSIDERATION IS THAT WE WERE BOTH SO BUSY LOOKING FOR THE RWY THAT NOBODY WAS TAKING CARE OF THE OTHER BUSINESS. ANOTHER CONSIDERATION IS THAT ALL THE HRLY SEQUENCES WERE RPTING CLR AND 7 MI, SO WE WEREN'T UP TO SPD WHEN UNFORECAST WX APPEARED.
