Narrative:
Pilot took off VFR at night from iowa city, ia, airport. Pilot was still setting up the plane and controls (climbing) when the class D airspace was entered without radio communication. When pilot leveled off he realized too late that he had entered the class D airspace without communicating. Pilot previously during an IFR flight that day from columbia, sc, to nashville, tn, and thence to iowa city, had gone 350 ft too low on an IFR clearance.

Title: PVT PLT OF AN SMA SEL PENETRATED CLASS D AIRSPACE.
Narrative: PLT TOOK OFF VFR AT NIGHT FROM IOWA CITY, IA, ARPT. PLT WAS STILL SETTING UP THE PLANE AND CTLS (CLBING) WHEN THE CLASS D AIRSPACE WAS ENTERED WITHOUT RADIO COM. WHEN PLT LEVELED OFF HE REALIZED TOO LATE THAT HE HAD ENTERED THE CLASS D AIRSPACE WITHOUT COMMUNICATING. PLT PREVIOUSLY DURING AN IFR FLT THAT DAY FROM COLUMBIA, SC, TO NASHVILLE, TN, AND THENCE TO IOWA CITY, HAD GONE 350 FT TOO LOW ON AN IFR CLRNC.
