Narrative:
Runway 28 active per ATIS and taxied on parallel taxiway from GA ramp. Advised tower ready to go upon reaching runway. Cleared for takeoff prior to reaching hold short line. Checked for inbound traffic as a matter of habit. Rolled onto runway and completed runway check. Gradually applied power. After departure both PIC and sic realized error of departure on runway 32 instead of runway 28. We were advised by tower on climb out, given a heading and handed off to departure. No conflicting traffic on either runway. Failure to closely examine airport diagram led to taxiway confusion. Assumed hold short line was for departure runway which we were cleared onto. Instruments and directional gyroscopes had been set on taxiway. Failure to reconfirm heading after taxiing into departure position. Runway numbers obscured by patch snow.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CHARTER FLC DEPARTED FROM THE WRONG RWY. DURING THE INITIAL CLB, THE FLC REALIZED THEIR MISTAKE. WRONG RWY TKOF.
Narrative: RWY 28 ACTIVE PER ATIS AND TAXIED ON PARALLEL TXWY FROM GA RAMP. ADVISED TWR READY TO GO UPON REACHING RWY. CLRED FOR TKOF PRIOR TO REACHING HOLD SHORT LINE. CHKED FOR INBOUND TFC AS A MATTER OF HABIT. ROLLED ONTO RWY AND COMPLETED RWY CHK. GRADUALLY APPLIED PWR. AFTER DEP BOTH PIC AND SIC REALIZED ERROR OF DEP ON RWY 32 INSTEAD OF RWY 28. WE WERE ADVISED BY TWR ON CLBOUT, GIVEN A HDG AND HANDED OFF TO DEP. NO CONFLICTING TFC ON EITHER RWY. FAILURE TO CLOSELY EXAMINE ARPT DIAGRAM LED TO TXWY CONFUSION. ASSUMED HOLD SHORT LINE WAS FOR DEP RWY WHICH WE WERE CLRED ONTO. INSTS AND DIRECTIONAL GYROSCOPES HAD BEEN SET ON TXWY. FAILURE TO RECONFIRM HDG AFTER TAXIING INTO DEP POS. RWY NUMBERS OBSCURED BY PATCH SNOW.
