Narrative:
During taxi out at detroit airport we were assigned runway 21R with runway 21C being closed. With traffic for runway 21R being heavy, we were sequenced in line behind a dash-8. When the dash-8 was cleared for takeoff, we were told position and hold, plan to follow the dash-8 right out, traffic landing 3 mi out. While the dash-8 was still on takeoff roll we were cleared for takeoff to fly a 190 degree heading. I then dialed 190 degrees in my heading bug and said to the first officer, 'he's not even off the runway yet.' failing to xchk heading bugs, after keeping visual with dash-8 and completing after takeoff checklist, did I notice the heading error. The first officer had set his bug to 170 degrees, it was then corrected. No comments of conflict was made from ATC, but the FAA inspector on board did. The problem was the rush that dtw tower had put on us trying to squeeze us out, between takeoff and arrival traffic. This was the last leg of a 3 day trip with am duty periods starting at XX55 am the last 2 days. Needless to say I was a little tired.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE FLC TOOK OFF WITH THE HDG BUG SET TO 170 DEGS INSTEAD OF 190 DEGS. THERE WAS AN ACR INSPECTOR IN THE JUMP SEAT WHO CALLED OUT THE HEADING ERROR AT THE SAME TIME THE CREW NOTICED THE DEV. THE TWR CLRED THE FLT FOR TKOF AND ASSIGNED A HDG BEFORE THE ACFT AHEAD HAD LIFTED OFF THE RWY, AND AFTER TELLING THE CREW THERE WAS TFC LNDG THAT WOULD NEED THE FLT TO TKOF IMMEDIATELY WHEN CLRED.
