Narrative:
En route from clt to oaj. Filed routing is clt-gippr sdz V54 fay V56 wallow intersection direct oaj. Normally I fly this trip about once a week. 99 percent of the time when fay establishes radar contact they will assign a heading to intercept V296 west of fay then on course. This particular trip we were given a heading to intercept V54 southeast of sdz. Out of habit and repetition I set in V296 271 degree radial off the fay VOR and proceeded to intercept that. Approximately 4 mi north of the airway ATC called and informed us we flew through V54 and gave us a heading that would keep us away from R5311. The restr area was never entered. A few mi later we were given direct fay and on course.
