Narrative:

On air carrier flight it was noted by FAA inspector the placard for illegal to tamper with the smoke detector in lavatory was missing. The crew placed a new placard in place of the missing one and I failed to place this in the aircraft log and/or have a certified maintenance person perform the replacing of the placard. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter barely remembers the incident. He has since retired and left all that behind him. He cannot give us a location of the event. Reporter stated that the FAA inspector made a comment as he left the aircraft that the placard should have been replaced by maintenance but there has been no followup that the reporter is aware of.
