Narrative:
Aircraft was returning to merced from modesto, where maintenance had been performed on the transponder and radios. Approach for landing was normal. Touchdown was accomplished with full flaps on centerline, 1000 ft down runway, at recommended airspeed and attitude with main gear first and nose gear lowered to runway. Shortly after start of rollout a slight deviation from centerline was noted and rudder correction applied with re- ctring on runway. Brakes were lightly applied to decrease roll distance and then aircraft began to drift right sharply and right wing rose, left rudder applied, right aileron applied to wings level, power applied as aircraft leveled, in attempt to make go around. Aircraft at this time left runway surface with control almost back parallel with runway. A runway light was struck with the left gear, aircraft power to idle as aircraft crossed the closed cross runway and rolled to stop in mud with engine at idle. Nose gear sunk into mud and aircraft lifted onto nose then settled back onto main gear. Fuel was shut off, ignition and master switches turned to off and aircraft evacuate/evacuationed. Aircraft came to rest 50 ft (left gear) from white stripe on right edge of runway. Tire skid marks indicated with right wing high attitude, in sharp turn, the right gear was off the runway surface with turning force. None of the 3 people aboard the aircraft received any injuries. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: aircraft is a C206 (F model). Maintenance inspection revealed a ctring failure on the front strut. The nosewheel was positioned at an angle toward the right when the aircraft touched down causing the aircraft to veer sharply to the right. Reporter submitted information to the FAA and has not yet received a reply.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF A C206 RPTED THAT THE ACFT'S R WING ROSE AND THE ACFT TURNED TO THE R DURING INITIAL BRAKING AND LNDG ROLLOUT. CTL FORCE AND GAR PWR DID NOT ALLOW RECOVERY AND THE ACFT DEPARTED THE RWY WHILE THE PLT TRIED TO STOP, RESULTING IN DAMAGE TO A RWY LIGHT. THE ACFT STOPPED BACK ON THE RWY AND THE PLT EVACED WITH PAX. LOSS OF ACFT CTL. RWY EXCURSION, ACFT EQUIP PROB FRONT STRUT STUCK IN POS NOSEWHEEL CTRING FAILURE.
Narrative: ACFT WAS RETURNING TO MERCED FROM MODESTO, WHERE MAINT HAD BEEN PERFORMED ON THE XPONDER AND RADIOS. APCH FOR LNDG WAS NORMAL. TOUCHDOWN WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITH FULL FLAPS ON CTRLINE, 1000 FT DOWN RWY, AT RECOMMENDED AIRSPD AND ATTITUDE WITH MAIN GEAR FIRST AND NOSE GEAR LOWERED TO RWY. SHORTLY AFTER START OF ROLLOUT A SLIGHT DEV FROM CTRLINE WAS NOTED AND RUDDER CORRECTION APPLIED WITH RE- CTRING ON RWY. BRAKES WERE LIGHTLY APPLIED TO DECREASE ROLL DISTANCE AND THEN ACFT BEGAN TO DRIFT R SHARPLY AND R WING ROSE, L RUDDER APPLIED, R AILERON APPLIED TO WINGS LEVEL, PWR APPLIED AS ACFT LEVELED, IN ATTEMPT TO MAKE GAR. ACFT AT THIS TIME LEFT RWY SURFACE WITH CTL ALMOST BACK PARALLEL WITH RWY. A RWY LIGHT WAS STRUCK WITH THE L GEAR, ACFT PWR TO IDLE AS ACFT CROSSED THE CLOSED CROSS RWY AND ROLLED TO STOP IN MUD WITH ENG AT IDLE. NOSE GEAR SUNK INTO MUD AND ACFT LIFTED ONTO NOSE THEN SETTLED BACK ONTO MAIN GEAR. FUEL WAS SHUT OFF, IGNITION AND MASTER SWITCHES TURNED TO OFF AND ACFT EVACED. ACFT CAME TO REST 50 FT (L GEAR) FROM WHITE STRIPE ON R EDGE OF RWY. TIRE SKID MARKS INDICATED WITH R WING HIGH ATTITUDE, IN SHARP TURN, THE R GEAR WAS OFF THE RWY SURFACE WITH TURNING FORCE. NONE OF THE 3 PEOPLE ABOARD THE ACFT RECEIVED ANY INJURIES. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: ACFT IS A C206 (F MODEL). MAINT INSPECTION REVEALED A CTRING FAILURE ON THE FRONT STRUT. THE NOSEWHEEL WAS POSITIONED AT AN ANGLE TOWARD THE R WHEN THE ACFT TOUCHED DOWN CAUSING THE ACFT TO VEER SHARPLY TO THE R. RPTR SUBMITTED INFO TO THE FAA AND HAS NOT YET RECEIVED A REPLY.
