Narrative:
Time XA23Z, ATC frequency 126.90. ATC facility -- ord tower. Location: ord. Cleared for takeoff while rolling into position and told to stay with the tower. We started a turn to 270 degrees. Controller caught our error and brought us back to a 290 degree heading. Supplemental information from acn 330849: in line for takeoff on runway 32L. 4 aircraft in front of us were cleared on 270 degree heading. Anticipating same we set heading bug to 270 degrees. We were cleared for takeoff while completing the checklist and taxiing. Did not hear runway heading in takeoff clearance. After takeoff we turned to the 270 degree heading that was set in the heading window. Controller corrected us back to 290 degree heading. Suggest setting heading bug to runway heading until cleared otherwise.
