Narrative:
When departing orf on IFR plan, radar vectors to route filed, aircraft compass system became intermittent. While trying to correct flight path deviation and compass system malfunction and radio station changes, assigned altitude was missed and violated by approximately 850 ft. Crossing traffic was reported to be less than 1 mi, 10-12 O'clock, level 5000 ft. An immediate descent was made when departure notified me of situation. Aircraft is in avionics repair at present.
