Narrative:
We landed at ord on apr/xx/96 at about XA30 local on runway 32L without a landing clearance. It was the second leg of an all night, 3 leg trip for the 5TH straight night. Approach control gave us a vector to and cleared us for the ILS runway 32L approach about 8 mi outside the marker and told us to contact ord tower at the marker. I (the first officer) was flying the airplane and was used to using the taxi light on as an indication of landing clearance. On final, seeing the light on, I thought we had been cleared to land. I forgot that this particular captain did not use the procedure for landing clearance confirmation. After landing, when I took control of the radios to get runway clearing instructions, we realized we were still on approach control.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A WDB LANDED WITHOUT CLRNC AFTER FORGETTING TO CONTACT THE TWR AT THE OM AS INSTRUCTED BY APCH CTL.
Narrative: WE LANDED AT ORD ON APR/XX/96 AT ABOUT XA30 LCL ON RWY 32L WITHOUT A LNDG CLRNC. IT WAS THE SECOND LEG OF AN ALL NIGHT, 3 LEG TRIP FOR THE 5TH STRAIGHT NIGHT. APCH CTL GAVE US A VECTOR TO AND CLRED US FOR THE ILS RWY 32L APCH ABOUT 8 MI OUTSIDE THE MARKER AND TOLD US TO CONTACT ORD TWR AT THE MARKER. I (THE FO) WAS FLYING THE AIRPLANE AND WAS USED TO USING THE TAXI LIGHT ON AS AN INDICATION OF LNDG CLRNC. ON FINAL, SEEING THE LIGHT ON, I THOUGHT WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO LAND. I FORGOT THAT THIS PARTICULAR CAPT DID NOT USE THE PROC FOR LNDG CLRNC CONFIRMATION. AFTER LNDG, WHEN I TOOK CTL OF THE RADIOS TO GET RWY CLRING INSTRUCTIONS, WE REALIZED WE WERE STILL ON APCH CTL.
