Narrative:
I was flying my stearman on an uncontrolled airport with no traffic in the area. I was flying a few friends and did a few 'closed' patterns near the departure end of the runway with spectators and hangars in the area. Being primarily a military F16 pilot all my life, I was not aware such flying was illegal or considered unsafe. Once I returned to the airport a few days later I was approached by pilots whom I greatly respect who said this was not smart. They proceed to brief me on rules pertaining to 'uncontrolled' airports with no aircraft in the area. I have since realized how lucky I was and am greatly indebted to these pilots to confront me with proper procedures for everyone's safety. I will pass on these lessons to all I meet.
