Narrative:

Flight from lih to hnl. Received descent clearance from center to 8000 ft. Switched to approach control at normal point. A large thunderstorm was just south of barbers point and approach was very busy vectoring aircraft around the thunderstorm. Approach control gave us the clearance 'air carrier X, descend to 3000 ft, fly heading 110 degrees, intercept the runway 8L localizer, cleared for the ILS approach.' we received a TCASII signal of traffic at 11 O'clock 800 ft below us, at approximately 8 mi. The signal rapidly closed to within 2 mi and 200 ft. A TCASII RA was received and followed, to climb. We advised approach, as we saw the air carrier Y, DC10 pass by, that we were responding to a TCASII RA. Approach told us that he previously told us to expedite descent below 6000 ft. Neither the copilot or myself heard that supposed expedite call. It could have been stepped on by other radio calls. There was a lot of chatter. The rest of the flight was uneventful.

Title: FLC OF A DC9 CLBED IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII DURING DSCNT FOR LNDG.

Narrative: FLT FROM LIH TO HNL. RECEIVED DSCNT CLRNC FROM CTR TO 8000 FT. SWITCHED TO APCH CTL AT NORMAL POINT. A LARGE TSTM WAS JUST S OF BARBERS POINT AND APCH WAS VERY BUSY VECTORING ACFT AROUND THE TSTM. APCH CTL GAVE US THE CLRNC 'ACR X, DSND TO 3000 FT, FLY HDG 110 DEGS, INTERCEPT THE RWY 8L LOC, CLRED FOR THE ILS APCH.' WE RECEIVED A TCASII SIGNAL OF TFC AT 11 O'CLOCK 800 FT BELOW US, AT APPROX 8 MI. THE SIGNAL RAPIDLY CLOSED TO WITHIN 2 MI AND 200 FT. A TCASII RA WAS RECEIVED AND FOLLOWED, TO CLB. WE ADVISED APCH, AS WE SAW THE ACR Y, DC10 PASS BY, THAT WE WERE RESPONDING TO A TCASII RA. APCH TOLD US THAT HE PREVIOUSLY TOLD US TO EXPEDITE DSCNT BELOW 6000 FT. NEITHER THE COPLT OR MYSELF HEARD THAT SUPPOSED EXPEDITE CALL. IT COULD HAVE BEEN STEPPED ON BY OTHER RADIO CALLS. THERE WAS A LOT OF CHATTER. THE REST OF THE FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL.
