Narrative:
Got busy attempting to reach socal while student was flying by pilotage. When contact was made with socal, we were at the upper edge of class D (whiteman) and 2-WAY had not been established. Student unaware that he was in class D was continuing flight. Upon discovery and having received class C entry permission, we (CFI) expedited climb out of class D. I, CFI, should have been a bit less busy with radio and more attentive with the pilotage.
