Narrative:
Cleared to climb and maintain 8000 ft with rockford approach control. My mind was preoccupied with other non flight related thoughts. Our sops require both crew members to respond to the 1000 ft altitude alerter chime with verbal acknowledgement of altitude passing through, level off altitude. Altitude alerter set properly, and flight director set and armed for altitude capture. Both crew members missed the 1000 ft call. PNF warned me after passing through 8000 ft. Rockford approach also warned as we were nearing 8500 ft as I was correcting back to 8000 ft. Complacency, preoccupation with non-flight related issues, not focused on flight parameters, not adhering to our sops -- these were the issues that caused this altitude bust.
