Narrative:
Pushback clearance from this gate has not been required for at least 10 yrs. First officer received and copied ATIS but did not hear end of ATIS message which stated pushback clearance was required. We pushed back without clearance as we always did. The ground controller seemed very annoyed. It is not a requirement for both pilots to listen to ATIS -- maybe it should be.

Title: MLG ACFT FLC FAILED TO CONTACT GND CTLR AS PER ATIS INFO. FLC FO OBTAINED ATIS, BUT FAILED TO INFORM CAPT OF NEW REQUIREMENT FOR PUSHBACK CLRNC.
Narrative: PUSHBACK CLRNC FROM THIS GATE HAS NOT BEEN REQUIRED FOR AT LEAST 10 YRS. FO RECEIVED AND COPIED ATIS BUT DID NOT HEAR END OF ATIS MESSAGE WHICH STATED PUSHBACK CLRNC WAS REQUIRED. WE PUSHED BACK WITHOUT CLRNC AS WE ALWAYS DID. THE GND CTLR SEEMED VERY ANNOYED. IT IS NOT A REQUIREMENT FOR BOTH PLTS TO LISTEN TO ATIS -- MAYBE IT SHOULD BE.
