Narrative:
Routine approach and landing. No instructions were given regarding exit from runway prior to or during landing roll. I was beginning turn into taxiway J to go to the gate when tower said something like, 'make a left turnoff, taxiway a is backed up.' since I was already partially off runway and there was nothing blocking access to ramp, I said, 'I have a clear shot to ramp.' tower cleared us in to ramp. As I was starting to move aircraft, I observed another air carrier aircraft moving west on taxiway a at a fairly high taxi speed. He was not about to stop, so I did. A few seconds later, as I was proceeding in to ramp, tower said, 'I thought you said you had a clear shot.' I said I did at the time I said it, but that other air carrier wasn't stopping when he came into view, so I did.

Narrative: ROUTINE APCH AND LNDG. NO INSTRUCTIONS WERE GIVEN REGARDING EXIT FROM RWY PRIOR TO OR DURING LNDG ROLL. I WAS BEGINNING TURN INTO TXWY J TO GO TO THE GATE WHEN TWR SAID SOMETHING LIKE, 'MAKE A L TURNOFF, TXWY A IS BACKED UP.' SINCE I WAS ALREADY PARTIALLY OFF RWY AND THERE WAS NOTHING BLOCKING ACCESS TO RAMP, I SAID, 'I HAVE A CLR SHOT TO RAMP.' TWR CLRED US IN TO RAMP. AS I WAS STARTING TO MOVE ACFT, I OBSERVED ANOTHER ACR ACFT MOVING W ON TXWY A AT A FAIRLY HIGH TAXI SPD. HE WAS NOT ABOUT TO STOP, SO I DID. A FEW SECONDS LATER, AS I WAS PROCEEDING IN TO RAMP, TWR SAID, 'I THOUGHT YOU SAID YOU HAD A CLR SHOT.' I SAID I DID AT THE TIME I SAID IT, BUT THAT OTHER ACR WASN'T STOPPING WHEN HE CAME INTO VIEW, SO I DID.
