Narrative:

While at cruise at FL230 TCASII announced 'traffic.' while looking for traffic TCASII gave an RA of 'climb, climb now.' crew responded by climbing. The TCASII continued the RA of climb through FL240 up to FL244 as we continued to climb. We finally saw traffic that was level at FL240, when we were at FL242. This was a serious equipment malfunction that almost caused a midair collision. After resolution passed we descended back to FL23O. TCASII performed normally the rest of the flight. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter was flying a D328.
