Narrative:

ATC gave us an untimely descent clearance to cross 40 mi west of ric at 9000 ft. We stated that we could not comply with that crossing restr, based on our position and altitude. ATC did not issue an amended clearance, but issued the following instruction: 'do the best you can.' we consider this an inadequate clearance. Perhaps a vector off course and a standard descent clearance would have been the best course of action.
