Narrative:
Air carrier X was cleared for takeoff by atlanta tower (119.5). Atlanta tower also uses another frequency for runway 26R for landing and crossing runway 26L. We just started our roll when the captain called 80 KTS and the tower called to say discontinue the takeoff because of crossing traffic at the west end. We did stop, taxi back, check our charts for brake energy, and took off again. Supplemental information from acn 454815: the takeoff was normal and I was mostly inside confirming the engine instruments and power settings. As I was making the 80 KT call tower said something, which I did not understand since I was talking at the same time. Tower said air carrier X abort a second time and we pulled the throttles to idle. I looked to the end of the runway to see an L1011 followed closely by a B727 crossing the runway. This situation was caused by atlanta tower insisting on allowing different aircraft using the same runway, but be controled on different radio frequencys unlike any other airport I am aware of. Atlanta allows aircraft to take off on 125.32, but aircraft crossing the runway after landing on runway 26R on frequency 119.5. Pilots are taken out of the loop. Why can't atlanta do this like dfw and other airports and require landing aircraft hold short of runway 26L and monitor 125.32. Also I allowed tower to rush me into an expedited departure.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ATL LCL CTLR CLRED B727 FOR TKOF, BUT THEN ABORTED THE FLT BECAUSE OF TFC XING THE RWY.
Narrative: ACR X WAS CLRED FOR TKOF BY ATLANTA TWR (119.5). ATLANTA TWR ALSO USES ANOTHER FREQ FOR RWY 26R FOR LNDG AND XING RWY 26L. WE JUST STARTED OUR ROLL WHEN THE CAPT CALLED 80 KTS AND THE TWR CALLED TO SAY DISCONTINUE THE TKOF BECAUSE OF XING TFC AT THE W END. WE DID STOP, TAXI BACK, CHK OUR CHARTS FOR BRAKE ENERGY, AND TOOK OFF AGAIN. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 454815: THE TKOF WAS NORMAL AND I WAS MOSTLY INSIDE CONFIRMING THE ENG INSTS AND PWR SETTINGS. AS I WAS MAKING THE 80 KT CALL TWR SAID SOMETHING, WHICH I DID NOT UNDERSTAND SINCE I WAS TALKING AT THE SAME TIME. TWR SAID ACR X ABORT A SECOND TIME AND WE PULLED THE THROTTLES TO IDLE. I LOOKED TO THE END OF THE RWY TO SEE AN L1011 FOLLOWED CLOSELY BY A B727 XING THE RWY. THIS SIT WAS CAUSED BY ATLANTA TWR INSISTING ON ALLOWING DIFFERENT ACFT USING THE SAME RWY, BUT BE CTLED ON DIFFERENT RADIO FREQS UNLIKE ANY OTHER ARPT I AM AWARE OF. ATLANTA ALLOWS ACFT TO TAKE OFF ON 125.32, BUT ACFT XING THE RWY AFTER LNDG ON RWY 26R ON FREQ 119.5. PLTS ARE TAKEN OUT OF THE LOOP. WHY CAN'T ATLANTA DO THIS LIKE DFW AND OTHER ARPTS AND REQUIRE LNDG ACFT HOLD SHORT OF RWY 26L AND MONITOR 125.32. ALSO I ALLOWED TWR TO RUSH ME INTO AN EXPEDITED DEP.
