Narrative:
While conducting skydive operations over X21 at 13500 ft MSL we instituted a precautionary left engine shutdown. The events were as follows: within 1 min of releasing the last 3 jumpers, the left engine began to surge. At this time, the fuel low level light illuminated while both tanks indicated approximately 300-350 pounds remaining. (1 hour flying time.) the jumpers were released and an engine shutdown procedure was initiated and completed. Reference to the pilots operating handbook was begun for completion of non memory items. During this time we descended for the airport and failed to notify orlando approach of our engine shutdown. Landing was uneventful and upon maintenance examination the fuel gauge was found faulty. In the future, should a similar event occur we would notify ATC of our situation.
