Narrative:
Cleared by ATC 121.8 at dtw from circle 4, 'air carrier X join taxiway Y via K13 taxi to runway 21R hold short of K15.' while on taxiway Y abeam K14, ground instructed us to go behind a B747-400 under maintenance tow. The B747-400 was being towed on taxiway Y heading 215 degrees abeam Y16. After clearing (visually) the txwys, the captain turned off taxiway Y onto K15 then 035 degrees on K holding behind traffic short of K16. Ground then chastised us for turning to go around the B747-400/behind the B747 so we could taxi to runway 21R. Supplemental information from acn 361819: while first officer was programming FMS, captain thought he heard ground direct us to taxi onto taxiway Y then back to taxiway K via K15. When we returned to taxiway K, ground control expressed some degree of surprise. Apparently he wanted us to remain on taxiway Y. Next time I will insist that ground control repeat his instruction so that both the first officer and I agree to what the proper taxi instructions are.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR LGT PIC DOES NOT FOLLOW TAXI RTE AS GIVEN BY GND CTLR IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET AROUND A B747-400 BEING TOWED BY ACR MAINT PERSONNEL.
Narrative: CLRED BY ATC 121.8 AT DTW FROM CIRCLE 4, 'ACR X JOIN TXWY Y VIA K13 TAXI TO RWY 21R HOLD SHORT OF K15.' WHILE ON TXWY Y ABEAM K14, GND INSTRUCTED US TO GO BEHIND A B747-400 UNDER MAINT TOW. THE B747-400 WAS BEING TOWED ON TXWY Y HDG 215 DEGS ABEAM Y16. AFTER CLRING (VISUALLY) THE TXWYS, THE CAPT TURNED OFF TXWY Y ONTO K15 THEN 035 DEGS ON K HOLDING BEHIND TFC SHORT OF K16. GND THEN CHASTISED US FOR TURNING TO GO AROUND THE B747-400/BEHIND THE B747 SO WE COULD TAXI TO RWY 21R. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 361819: WHILE FO WAS PROGRAMMING FMS, CAPT THOUGHT HE HEARD GND DIRECT US TO TAXI ONTO TXWY Y THEN BACK TO TXWY K VIA K15. WHEN WE RETURNED TO TXWY K, GND CTL EXPRESSED SOME DEG OF SURPRISE. APPARENTLY HE WANTED US TO REMAIN ON TXWY Y. NEXT TIME I WILL INSIST THAT GND CTL REPEAT HIS INSTRUCTION SO THAT BOTH THE FO AND I AGREE TO WHAT THE PROPER TAXI INSTRUCTIONS ARE.
