Narrative:
While approximately 15 mi east of lbb we were cleared for the visual approach to runway 36L and instructed to follow a saab commuter aircraft to the airport. I was the PF and unfortunately I did not understand this clearance correctly. I did not see the other aircraft or know that we were supposed to follow it. Traveling much faster, so soon overtook the other aircraft before it was visually acquired. We queried and informed ATC that we could not follow the saab since we were now in front of it. ATC then cleared us for the visual approach (again) and made the saab follow us to the airport. I realized my mistake and expedited to the airport to help prevent the saab from slowing down more than he had to. In my haste it is possible that I may have exceeded the 200 mph speed limit in the air traffic area. Contributing to the problem was that I was testing a new anr headset and was having some trouble adjusting the volume and making it work right. This was responsible for me missing or having misunderstood the call from ATC.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PIC OF EMB120 IN A NON ADHERENCE TO ATC CLRNC INSTRUCTION WHEN ISSUED A VISUAL APCH TO ARPT RELATIVE TO FOLLOWING AN SF340.
Narrative: WHILE APPROX 15 MI E OF LBB WE WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 36L AND INSTRUCTED TO FOLLOW A SAAB COMMUTER ACFT TO THE ARPT. I WAS THE PF AND UNFORTUNATELY I DID NOT UNDERSTAND THIS CLRNC CORRECTLY. I DID NOT SEE THE OTHER ACFT OR KNOW THAT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO FOLLOW IT. TRAVELING MUCH FASTER, SO SOON OVERTOOK THE OTHER ACFT BEFORE IT WAS VISUALLY ACQUIRED. WE QUERIED AND INFORMED ATC THAT WE COULD NOT FOLLOW THE SAAB SINCE WE WERE NOW IN FRONT OF IT. ATC THEN CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL APCH (AGAIN) AND MADE THE SAAB FOLLOW US TO THE ARPT. I REALIZED MY MISTAKE AND EXPEDITED TO THE ARPT TO HELP PREVENT THE SAAB FROM SLOWING DOWN MORE THAN HE HAD TO. IN MY HASTE IT IS POSSIBLE THAT I MAY HAVE EXCEEDED THE 200 MPH SPD LIMIT IN THE ATA. CONTRIBUTING TO THE PROB WAS THAT I WAS TESTING A NEW ANR HEADSET AND WAS HAVING SOME TROUBLE ADJUSTING THE VOLUME AND MAKING IT WORK RIGHT. THIS WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR ME MISSING OR HAVING MISUNDERSTOOD THE CALL FROM ATC.
