Narrative:
The fdc NOTAM file contains many NOTAMS that are absurdly out of date. Since these NOTAMS cover important directives (MEA's, map's, MDA's, etc) and take precedence over charts and approach procedures, they must be canceled when appropriate. If we can't trust them to be accurate, why bother checking them? The issuing authority/authorized should provide an expected termination date and that date could be used for automatic cancellation. That date should be provided with the NOTAM. (Stupid descriptors like 'until canceled,' would not be acceptable.) FSS computers only hold the NOTAMS for about 1 yr but the duats faithfully brief you with all the current NOTAMS. This lapse is an important safety issue. It needs to be fixed.
