Narrative:

Leveloff altitude was 29000 ft. Prior to that, there was a discrepancy in the FMS's with regard to the next waypoint. I was in the left seat and became involved in the resolution of the navigation problem. The altitude select somehow became disengaged and we went to 30500 ft before I noticed! Classic case of not flying the aircraft with both heads down setting the FMS. Contributing factors: less than 100 hours experience with this aircraft, with EFIS and different flight director/autoplt, there may also be a malfunction in the altitude alert system.
