Narrative:
Atcs is holding about 5 aircraft for stl. All aircraft are within 5 mins of efc times. Aircraft #2 checks on frequency at FL240 and approaching holding fix. Atcs clears aircraft #1 to stl via trake 7 STAR with a crossing restr of 15000 ft by 11 mi west of ftz. The readback sounded correct. Aircraft #1 now asks if that clearance was for him. Atcs stated affirmative and aircraft #2 was given a safe altitude to maintain and reissued holding. Aircraft #1 did the 'heads up' and requested clarification. Aircraft #1 did the right thing and kept the atcs from having a very serious situation develop very quickly. Aircraft #2 was approaching efc and mistakenly took #1's clearance. Pilots and controllers all get hurried on occasion, but aircraft #1 did the right thing by insuring the correct aircraft got the correct clearance. Kudos to pilots out there where safety and not time are their #1 priority.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RPTR ISSUES CLRNC TO ACFT #1 BUT MISSES THE READBACK WHICH WAS FROM ACFT #2. ACFT #1 ASKS IF THE CLRNC IS FOR THEM. AFTER CLARIFYING THE CLRNC FOR ACFT #1, RPTR REISSUES HOLDING CLRNC TO ACFT #2.
Narrative: ATCS IS HOLDING ABOUT 5 ACFT FOR STL. ALL ACFT ARE WITHIN 5 MINS OF EFC TIMES. ACFT #2 CHKS ON FREQ AT FL240 AND APCHING HOLDING FIX. ATCS CLRS ACFT #1 TO STL VIA TRAKE 7 STAR WITH A XING RESTR OF 15000 FT BY 11 MI W OF FTZ. THE READBACK SOUNDED CORRECT. ACFT #1 NOW ASKS IF THAT CLRNC WAS FOR HIM. ATCS STATED AFFIRMATIVE AND ACFT #2 WAS GIVEN A SAFE ALT TO MAINTAIN AND REISSUED HOLDING. ACFT #1 DID THE 'HEADS UP' AND REQUESTED CLARIFICATION. ACFT #1 DID THE RIGHT THING AND KEPT THE ATCS FROM HAVING A VERY SERIOUS SIT DEVELOP VERY QUICKLY. ACFT #2 WAS APCHING EFC AND MISTAKENLY TOOK #1'S CLRNC. PLTS AND CTLRS ALL GET HURRIED ON OCCASION, BUT ACFT #1 DID THE RIGHT THING BY INSURING THE CORRECT ACFT GOT THE CORRECT CLRNC. KUDOS TO PLTS OUT THERE WHERE SAFETY AND NOT TIME ARE THEIR #1 PRIORITY.
