Narrative:

Getting clearance on ground didn't receive initial altitude. First officer asked controller about it. Was told as of SID. Captain and first officer looked on SID, couldn't find altitude first. Found only 2 fixes, 'cross at or above' with a 10000 ft altitude later. So they agreed on 10000 ft. On takeoff, we followed SID and climbing out of 9000 ft rome radar asked us of altitude. We said 9300 ft for 10000 ft. He asked us who cleared us to 10000 ft and we said per SID. He told us we were cleared via ostia 5B.bolserra 5A and the altitude on that SID transition is 5000 ft. We apologized and he said no problem and maintain 9000 ft for now. We later, in cruise, looked at the SID. First there are approximately 5 different departures in 4 different transitions on 1 sheet. Then the language barrier. Luckily, nothing happened this time.
