Narrative:
Copilot was handling all communications and radio frequency management. Approach gave us a vector and a descent assignment. Immediately after, copilot used #2 radio to call FBO. When he completed that communication, he came back to radio #1 and in his eagerness to 'stay ahead' of the business of ATC clrncs and checklists and other cockpit duties, he put willow run (destination airport) tower and ground frequencys in the #1 radio. Therefore, a period of about 4-6 mins passed before I noticed the loss of radio contact with dtw approach. We got back on the proper frequency and ATC informed us that they had to divert numerous aircraft and nearly had to shut down departures from dtw because we got so close to the departure corridor before re- establishing radio contact.

Title: CPR JET CREATES TFC PROBS FOR DTW APCH CTL WHEN FO PREMATURELY DIALS IN PLANNED FREQS INTO #1 RADIO HEAD, THE ONE BEING USED FOR ATC. FO HAD BEEN COPYING ATIS INFO.
Narrative: COPLT WAS HANDLING ALL COMS AND RADIO FREQ MGMNT. APCH GAVE US A VECTOR AND A DSCNT ASSIGNMENT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER, COPLT USED #2 RADIO TO CALL FBO. WHEN HE COMPLETED THAT COM, HE CAME BACK TO RADIO #1 AND IN HIS EAGERNESS TO 'STAY AHEAD' OF THE BUSINESS OF ATC CLRNCS AND CHKLISTS AND OTHER COCKPIT DUTIES, HE PUT WILLOW RUN (DEST ARPT) TWR AND GND FREQS IN THE #1 RADIO. THEREFORE, A PERIOD OF ABOUT 4-6 MINS PASSED BEFORE I NOTICED THE LOSS OF RADIO CONTACT WITH DTW APCH. WE GOT BACK ON THE PROPER FREQ AND ATC INFORMED US THAT THEY HAD TO DIVERT NUMEROUS ACFT AND NEARLY HAD TO SHUT DOWN DEPS FROM DTW BECAUSE WE GOT SO CLOSE TO THE DEP CORRIDOR BEFORE RE- ESTABLISHING RADIO CONTACT.
