Narrative:
During our approach to landing at ewr, we experienced a loss of hydraulic fluid in the right system to near zero as the landing gear was being extended. The landing gear did come down, however at a slower than normal rate. The nose gear took the most time to extend. We initiated a missed approach leaving the gear down, and went through the abnormal checklists for a hydraulic system failure, which also required that the alternate gear extension handle be used also. This procedure leaves the main landing gear doors open, thus the aircraft must remain straight ahead and stop so as not to damage the gear doors. We landed uneventfully and stopped straight ahead on the runway, where maintenance pinned the landing gear, closed the gear doors, and towed us to the gate.
