Narrative:
En route from sjc to lax at filed cruise altitude FL330, approximately 10-15 DME past ave VOR on the sadde 6 arrival to lax. Autothrottles on, with performance management system engaged. Autoplt on and navigating by vlfirst officermega. Pilots backing up navigation with vors. In contact with ZLA. 2 pilots, 3 flight attendants, 80 passenger and 1 lap child. Aircraft MD87, P&west JT8D-219. We heard a muffled 'boom' followed by an increasing rumble and a more muffled pop. Engine parameters on the left side showed rapidly decreasing rotational speeds and egt rising to 800 degrees. Autothrottles disengaged and left throttle brought to idle. ATC advised and engine shutdown checklist accomplished. Rumbling sound and vibration continued even after engine shutdown. Flight attendants were briefed for a normal landing and passenger were advised of our situation by the captain via the PA. We continued flying the sadde 6 arrival to lax and met all restrs. We were subsequently cleared for a visual approach to runway 24R and landed uneventfully. Initial inspection showed no damage to the front of the engine, fan blades, or first stage compressor blades. Failure was internal.
