Narrative:

On takeoff we were given 2 or 3 route changes that were not on our flight plan, and several 1000 ft step-climbs until we received a clearance to 10000 ft, which we read back. Our flight plan altitude was FL180. We switched to next departure control and were questioned on our altitude and told to descend to 8000 ft, which we did as rapidly as possible.
