Narrative:
Flying C172 jun/xa/97 approximately XA30 hours. While flying as PIC with my son as a passenger, an incident occurred when aircraft could not be stopped prior to end of runway. Aircraft departed end of runway down shallow embankment and came to rest approximately 40 ft from end of runway. Aircraft was being flown from greenwood lake, nj (4n1), to warwick airport, ny (N72). A low box approach was flown to look at windsock negative response on unicom. Windsock indicated direct crosswind approximately 12-15 KTS. VFR pattern was flown to runway 3. Landing required little wind correction on final. Upon landing right crosswind in effect. Corrected to center of runway. Approximately 1/2 way down runway begins downslope, strong tailwind experienced. Applied maximum continuous braking. Aircraft slowed but not sufficient to stop in remaining runway. Factors of majority of time in large jets was to apply continuous brake pressure and not reconfigure flaps during landing roll.

Title: PLT OF A C172 LOST CTL OF ACFT DURING LNDG AND RAN OFF THE END OF THE RWY AND OVER AN EMBANKMENT. NO APPARENT DAMAGE TO THE ACFT OR INJURIES.
Narrative: FLYING C172 JUN/XA/97 APPROX XA30 HRS. WHILE FLYING AS PIC WITH MY SON AS A PAX, AN INCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN ACFT COULD NOT BE STOPPED PRIOR TO END OF RWY. ACFT DEPARTED END OF RWY DOWN SHALLOW EMBANKMENT AND CAME TO REST APPROX 40 FT FROM END OF RWY. ACFT WAS BEING FLOWN FROM GREENWOOD LAKE, NJ (4N1), TO WARWICK ARPT, NY (N72). A LOW BOX APCH WAS FLOWN TO LOOK AT WINDSOCK NEGATIVE RESPONSE ON UNICOM. WINDSOCK INDICATED DIRECT XWIND APPROX 12-15 KTS. VFR PATTERN WAS FLOWN TO RWY 3. LNDG REQUIRED LITTLE WIND CORRECTION ON FINAL. UPON LNDG R XWIND IN EFFECT. CORRECTED TO CTR OF RWY. APPROX 1/2 WAY DOWN RWY BEGINS DOWNSLOPE, STRONG TAILWIND EXPERIENCED. APPLIED MAX CONTINUOUS BRAKING. ACFT SLOWED BUT NOT SUFFICIENT TO STOP IN REMAINING RWY. FACTORS OF MAJORITY OF TIME IN LARGE JETS WAS TO APPLY CONTINUOUS BRAKE PRESSURE AND NOT RECONFIGURE FLAPS DURING LNDG ROLL.
