Narrative:
En route to lax from atl and 60 NM west of abq noted loss of oil quantity in #2 engine (3 engine aircraft) oil pressure was normal although fluctuating slightly. Oil temperature was normal. Oil pressure slowly decreased. Oil pressure light came on at AB28Z and engine was shut down. Descended to FL190 for 2 engine long range cruise. Considering nature of the engine problem, aircraft weight, 2 engine cruise altitude and time to descend it was decided to continue to lax. That course of action considered to be as safe as a landing at phx (nearest airport). Uneventful landing at lax. After landing maintenance discovered a blown 'O' ring on the chip detector plug had caused a loss of oil quantity.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A COMMERCIAL FIXED WING WDB ACFT IN CRUISE SHUTDOWN #2 ENG DUE TO LOSS OF OIL QUANTITY AND PRESSURE CAUSED BY CHIP DETECTOR 'O' RING SEAL FAILURE.
Narrative: ENRTE TO LAX FROM ATL AND 60 NM W OF ABQ NOTED LOSS OF OIL QUANTITY IN #2 ENG (3 ENG ACFT) OIL PRESSURE WAS NORMAL ALTHOUGH FLUCTUATING SLIGHTLY. OIL TEMP WAS NORMAL. OIL PRESSURE SLOWLY DECREASED. OIL PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON AT AB28Z AND ENG WAS SHUT DOWN. DSNDED TO FL190 FOR 2 ENG LONG RANGE CRUISE. CONSIDERING NATURE OF THE ENG PROB, ACFT WT, 2 ENG CRUISE ALT AND TIME TO DSND IT WAS DECIDED TO CONTINUE TO LAX. THAT COURSE OF ACTION CONSIDERED TO BE AS SAFE AS A LNDG AT PHX (NEAREST ARPT). UNEVENTFUL LNDG AT LAX. AFTER LNDG MAINT DISCOVERED A BLOWN 'O' RING ON THE CHIP DETECTOR PLUG HAD CAUSED A LOSS OF OIL QUANTITY.
