Narrative:
Gatwick tower cleared us to line up and wait runway 8R with additional comments following the clearance that we did not understand. We asked them to clarify the clearance and they repeated, line up and wait, and I believe they said, 'reference' a BAE146. Although I had reviewed the departure plates for special communication phrases used in europe and had similar clrncs in the past, I thought he was talking about an aircraft that would depart in front of us. Consequently I pulled into position causing the tower to instruct the BAE146 to go around. Although I do think it would be nice to have standard phraseology worldwide, I believe that I made the mistake of taxiing into position without fully understanding every word in the clearance. I do not think that more training is the answer just more vigilance on my part.

Title: CAPT OF A WDB TAXIED INTO POS ON RWY FOR TKOF CAUSING THE TWR TO MAKE A BAE146 ON FINAL TO GO AROUND. CAPT WAS CONFUSED WITH THE FOREIGN PHRASEOLOGY.
Narrative: GATWICK TWR CLRED US TO LINE UP AND WAIT RWY 8R WITH ADDITIONAL COMMENTS FOLLOWING THE CLRNC THAT WE DID NOT UNDERSTAND. WE ASKED THEM TO CLARIFY THE CLRNC AND THEY REPEATED, LINE UP AND WAIT, AND I BELIEVE THEY SAID, 'REF' A BAE146. ALTHOUGH I HAD REVIEWED THE DEP PLATES FOR SPECIAL COM PHRASES USED IN EUROPE AND HAD SIMILAR CLRNCS IN THE PAST, I THOUGHT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT AN ACFT THAT WOULD DEPART IN FRONT OF US. CONSEQUENTLY I PULLED INTO POS CAUSING THE TWR TO INSTRUCT THE BAE146 TO GO AROUND. ALTHOUGH I DO THINK IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE STANDARD PHRASEOLOGY WORLDWIDE, I BELIEVE THAT I MADE THE MISTAKE OF TAXIING INTO POS WITHOUT FULLY UNDERSTANDING EVERY WORD IN THE CLRNC. I DO NOT THINK THAT MORE TRAINING IS THE ANSWER JUST MORE VIGILANCE ON MY PART.
