Narrative:
On a VFR flight from ful to sna I was given instructions by the tower to enter a right base and expect runway 19R. While still on right base the tower told me to turn right 20 degrees for traffic spacing and also (separately) to watch for a departing aircraft on right downwind for runway 19R. This 20 degree vector put me on course for mid-field and by the time I idented the departing downwind traffic, I was very close to the airport. I then requested to overfly the airport and enter a left downwind for runway 19L. The controller denied this request and instructed me to turn for a right downwind to right. I was cleared to land and in turning base to final for the right (because by then I was in too close in on my downwind) I overlapped the approach to runway 19L and came much too close to an aircraft on left base to runway 19L. Tower instructed me to realign to the right and I landed without further incident. The problem here was I allowed myself to become distracted looking for my traffic and did not keep in the proper traffic pattern for the right downwind.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC BTWN A C182 TURNING BASE TO FINAL FOR THE R PARALLEL, BUT EXTENDED TO OVER THE L RWY, AND A C152 TURNING BASE TO FINAL FOR THE L RWY.
Narrative: ON A VFR FLT FROM FUL TO SNA I WAS GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS BY THE TWR TO ENTER A R BASE AND EXPECT RWY 19R. WHILE STILL ON R BASE THE TWR TOLD ME TO TURN R 20 DEGS FOR TFC SPACING AND ALSO (SEPARATELY) TO WATCH FOR A DEPARTING ACFT ON R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 19R. THIS 20 DEG VECTOR PUT ME ON COURSE FOR MID-FIELD AND BY THE TIME I IDENTED THE DEPARTING DOWNWIND TFC, I WAS VERY CLOSE TO THE ARPT. I THEN REQUESTED TO OVERFLY THE ARPT AND ENTER A L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 19L. THE CTLR DENIED THIS REQUEST AND INSTRUCTED ME TO TURN FOR A R DOWNWIND TO R. I WAS CLRED TO LAND AND IN TURNING BASE TO FINAL FOR THE R (BECAUSE BY THEN I WAS IN TOO CLOSE IN ON MY DOWNWIND) I OVERLAPPED THE APCH TO RWY 19L AND CAME MUCH TOO CLOSE TO AN ACFT ON L BASE TO RWY 19L. TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO REALIGN TO THE R AND I LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THE PROB HERE WAS I ALLOWED MYSELF TO BECOME DISTRACTED LOOKING FOR MY TFC AND DID NOT KEEP IN THE PROPER TFC PATTERN FOR THE R DOWNWIND.
